Methamphetamine detox.

About methamphetamine.

Methamphetamine, or commonly referred to as “crystal meth” or “meth”, is a Central Nervous System stimulant made from amphetamine and other chemicals. Methamphetamine was once widely and legally available in tablet and injectable forms to treat decongestion and to aid in weight loss. Many people began to abuse these products due to the stimulant and addictive effect of the drug which prompted the FDA to restrict and regulate the drug as a Schedule II controlled substance in 1970. Currently, there is only one  remaining prescription methamphetamine drug on the market, Desoxyn, which is used to treat obesity and severe attention deficient hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Methamphetamine is a powerful and highly addictive stimulant that affects the central nervous system. Methamphetamine increases the amount of the natural chemical dopamine in the brain which induces feelings of pleasure, motivation, memory retention, learning and award processing. The drug’s ability to rapidly release high levels of dopamine in reward areas of the brain strongly reinforces repeated drug use. Methamphetamine can lead to addiction after a single use.

Those who have become addicted to methamphetamine, use it in its illicit forms called meth and crystal meth. Methamphetamine is a crystalline powder that is most commonly white, but may also appear yellowish, brownish, and pinkish. It is odorless and dissolvable in water and most commonly used by smoking, snorting, or injecting. Crystal meth is clear or blue and is shaped like coarse crystals. Though structurally methamphetamine and crystal methamphetamine differ, chemically they are the same. Both methamphetamine and crystal methamphetamine are commonly “cut” or mixed with other chemicals for added weight. More and more, methamphetamine and crystal methamphetamine are being cut with Fentanyl which is an opioid 50-100x more potent to than morphine. Those addicted to methamphetamine today are at a much greater risk unknown overdose or potential death.

Methamphetamine, once consumed, produces an increase in heart rate, blood pressure, and pleasure-inducing neurotransmitters in the brain. When methamphetamine is snorted, it creates a euphoric sensation but not a rush. Methamphetamine produces a stronger high when IV injected then smoking or snorting it, but the effects wear off more quickly this way. When Methamphetamine is injected, the initial rush from injection produces the strongest effects and can last up to 30 minutes and the drug experience a steady high that can last up to 24 hours.  Methamphetamine users are known to stay up for multiple days in a row due to binge use.
